Easy Ways to be Sustainable with Babies
Babies, it all goes so fast but how does something so little go through so much waste!? Seriously, the average newborn goes through an average of 10 diapers a day. Now times that by the amount of years disposable diapers take to breakdown – roughly 500 years! There are conscious changes we can make to better our children’s future on this earth. It doesn’t mean making huge changes, but just knowing what is better for you, and your family.
This blog post was made possible by my friends at Goodnest
- Cloth Diapering
Cloth usually gets met with a side eye and some disbelief, that is until they try it for themselves. It’s not as overwhelming or dirty as is often assumed. In fact, it’s the cleaner way to live. Cloth diapers can be reused for up to three children. (Depending on care) Not only that, but they beat disposables by being made with natural materials (think hemp and bamboo), and there is no plastic touching your baby’s bottom. Cloth diapering also saves you money in the long run, we’re talking in the thousands. It’s time we rethink reusables for babies.
- Goodnest
Making sustainability accessible is what I like to see! Enter, Goodnest. Available at Targets nationwide, this line of baby care items is earth loving, plastic free, and better for baby. Their 3-in-1 body wash, shampoo and conditioner is gentle on our little one’s skin, with soft suds and no added dyes, synthetics, parabens or phthalates.
The silicone bottles are reusable. Pair it with the cleaning tablets and water and you have some gentle baby cleaning power. Check out this video breakdown of Goodnest.- Baby Clothing Rental Membership
It’s no secret that babies grow out of their clothes in the blink of an eye. Even though you probably got an overload of cute outfits as gifts, the reality is they’re in pjs all day just like mom. That’s where clothing rental memberships come in. Pick what you like in the online closet, use it until your baby gets too big and send it back. Repeat as necessary! You don’t have to worry about buying a ton of clothes and having a closed loop system means clothes are doing their job and being loved!
- Make Homemade Purees
Knowing where your food comes from, and better yet locally produced food helps minimize your carbon footprint and impact on the environment. Making your own purees are a great way to know exactly what your baby is eating. It’s also a great way to prevent food waste, by using what you already have in your fridge. A mix of fruit, veggies, and even meats can be steamed and pureed for your baby’s food journey!
Being sustainable doesn’t mean a huge lifestyle change. It just means more conscious choices of what you buy and use in your home. Personally, I always look for ingredients that are plant based with no added chemicals, parabens, or plastic. Another huge factor for me is longevity. Will I be able to use this product or the packaging it comes in for a while? If not, is it easily recyclable?
Plus starting to make sustainable swaps young will make it normal for our children as they grow. They will be raised knowing we need to care for the world around us. The changes we make today will become the norm if we just keep it up! All I know is that if we don’t care for our planet now, then our kids won’t have much of it left to enjoy. We can all do our part for our planet, our kids, and future generations to come!

10 Eco-Friendly Disposable Diapers
It’s no secret that disposable diapers create a huge problem in our landfills, estimated to need 500 years to decompose. Being that disposables were invented around the 1950’s that means not us, not our parents, nor our grandparents have outlived disposable diaper waste.
While cloth diapering is the most sustainable option, it isn’t for everyone for reasons ranging from economic factors, to not having access to a regular laundry and wash routine. Not to mention the toxins and chemicals that most mainstream disposables carry. Don’t worry, my fellow planet loving parents – there are better options!
Let’s break down 10 of the most eco-friendly disposable diaper options, and dig deeper to what that really means!
Kudos
Kudos diapers are twice as plant based as other leading disposables on the market.
These diapers are not only absorbent, but leak proof! Made with 100% clean cotton in the liner – no plastic, they are working to become 100% planet friendly
2. Healthy Nest
Healthy Nest are also a sustainable choice. Made with plant based materials and without added dyes and toxins. They are also the first diapers to be EWG certified which upholds strict standards to confirm a product is toxin free. If you’ve never heard of these diapers you’ve most certainly heard of their parent company Happy Family Organics which make top of the line, organic, baby and toddler food.
3. Healthy Baby
No diaper, even these more sustainable options, are 100% biodegradable. That’s why we like Healthy Baby – there is no greenwashing, only transparency! They are the first EWG certified disposable diaper and use renewable plants like sugarcane instead of plastics. They’re made in Europe which has higher environmental standards than here in the US.
4. Dyper
Dyper brand are made of sustainable bamboo without added toxins or chemicals like latex, alcohol, or phosphates. They are safe for babies skin and biodegradable! Best of all they have a REDYPER program which lets you send back used diapers to be properly composted through TerraCycle to be used in projects all around the world!
5. Freestyle World
A tree free diaper – these are made with BambooTEK – a bamboo core which helps lock in wetness. They are strong against blowouts and have a Net Zero Plastic Waste certification which means they remove plastic from the environment. Not only are they planet friendly, but they have cute prints too if that’s your thing (it’s totally our thing).
6. Andy Pandy
Andy Pandy is 87% biodegradable, which is more than most of the diapers on this list! There is also no chlorine, PVC, alcohol, or preservatives. The downsides? Sizing is often off and not the best for overnight absorbency.
7. Coterie
Definitely considered a ‘luxury diaper brand,” Coterie has soft and absorbent diapers for your little ones. While not the most sustainable (only 25% is made of plant based materials) they partner with organizations that fund renewable energy sources as well as donating unused diapers to those in need.
8. Joone
Joone was founded on the principal of transparency. They have set high standards on the quality and traceability of their ingredients. Even providing the toxicology and clinical reports for their diapers. Made with sustainably sourced raw materials, they include non-toxic ingredients and are 100% biodegradable. Setting a high standard for other sustainable disposable brands.
9. Eco-Originals
The first plastic neutral diaper company, these diapers are made with 90% plant based materials. The company also dedicates themselves to building ethical recycling systems, renewable energy projects, and plant 1 tree per order. They offset the carbon from every order, which makes them zero-impact on carbon emissions. The diapers are 93% compostable and their wipes are 100% home compostable!
10. Eco by Naty
Founded by a mom for her own children, this brand of eco-friendly diapers were one of the first on the market (about 25 years). The diapers use renewable and compostable materials, like 100% wood pulp and is 85% compostable. They are also super transparent about their ingredient list and make a line of eco-friendly women’s care products.
How to Choose?
There are many brands with different values, ingredients, and price points. So, how do you choose the right eco-friendly disposable for your family? It really depends on you! There is no wrong answer, as sustainability is not linear. As I always say, we must focus on progress, not perfection. Even these small steps to a sustainable diaper is a big step in the long term well-being of our planet.
That being said, there were more mainstream brands that I chose to omit. While many claim to be better for the planet, that is not always the case and tends to greenwash in order to cater to a wider, more conscious customer base. I suggest looking into the ingredients and transparency of the brand you chose, like if they willingly share their supply chain and sourcing.
Either way, I am proud of you for taking a step in the greener direction. For you, for your family, and for our planet!

DIY Sustainable Toilet Bombs
I am by far the most lazy environmentalist (sustainable-ish, remember?), so anything that I say is easy really must be. These DIY Toilet Bombs are EASY! Not only that – but it’s a natural, non-toxic, and plastic free way to keep your bathroom clean. With just 4 ingredients, these can be mixed in only 5 minutes.
What are we waiting for?!
Why is Plastic Free Important?
No one has outlived a piece of plastic. That’s a scary thought! Plastic isn’t as recyclable as most people think, and when it breaks down it enters your waterways, wildlife, and even our bloodstream! Not to mention, plastic leeches toxins that can cause some long term effects for us humans. Why not avoid that altogether and go plastic free?
Things to Know
This recipe is super simple! With only 4 active ingredients (which you probably have around the house anyway).
You could use either tap water or distilled water. The reasons for using distilled vs tap water would depend on your local tap water. If your tap water has a lot of minerals in it (hard water), it could leave water marks when cleaning (which defeats the purpose)!
Spray bottles work best for integrating the water/essential oils mix into the powdered mixture. No spray bottle? No problem! Slow and steady wins the race (explained in recipe).
DIY Toilet Bombs
Ingredients
- 1 1/3 cup Baking Soda
- 1/2 cup of Citric Acid
- Essential Oils: Lemon for disinfecting, add any other scent you like! I add Eucalyptus to. mine.
- 1 tsp of water
- Silicone Mold
- Spray Bottle (optional, but very useful)
Directions
- In a non-metal bowl, combine the baking soda and citric acid. Mix well.
- Combine water and essential oils either in a spray bottle, or cup or bowl.
- Spray the water and oil mix very slowly into the dry powder and mix.
The mixture will fizzle a little – that’s okay! If you are pouring from a cup or bowl it is very important to go SLOW here! - Mix around until it is damp (like damp sand). If the mixture is too crumbly, add water a bit at a time (slowly, so it doesn’t fizzle!)
- Press into mold. Make sure that you compress well, but you don’t need to fill to the top as it will expand as it hardens
- Keep at room temperature to harden for 2-3 hours
- Store in an airtight jar until it’s time to use!
Using Your Toilet Bombs
Ready to unlock your homemade cleaning power?
Just grab one of the toilet bomb tablets, plop in your toilet bowl, and let fizzle. That’s it! Sure, grab your brush and scrub if you m use, but your toilet will be sparking clean, smell great, and all sustainably done!
See, that was easy! And all it took was 5 minutes out of your day to prep. You should only need one toilet bomb per cleaning, but I live with 3 boys so sometimes 2 is needed depending on the size.
If you don’t have a silicone mold, most baking or craft stores will. Even silicone ice cube trays works! Have fun and play around with different shapes for your toilet bombs.
Ready to make it yourself? Tag me in your creations so I can see! Need some more inspo? Check out this video I made detailing the process.

How to do Disney with Kids
Disney can be a LOT, especially navigating Disney with little ones. If you’re visiting Orlando for the parks, chances are you have an itinerary all planned out! But long park days can take a toll on the smallest guests. Here are some tricks and tips to remember when spending the day at Disney with babies and toddlers.
One thing is for sure, there is no “right age” for Disney! Not only are kids under 3 free, but the saying is “under 3 is for me” meaning taking our kids to the parks even when small means we as parents can soak in all the Disney magic through their eyes. We’ve taken our 2 year old and 6 month old and they both soak it all up!
Plan ahead, but prepare for madness
Can you really prepare for madness? Maybe not. But you can plan that things will not go according to plan! Either way, it’s good to have an idea of what you want to see and do at the parks. Lines can be long, the weather unforgiving, and our youngest little ones might not want to be as adaptable as we hope. If you can be prepared for potential meltdowns with their favorite snack or toy you just might save the day.
Remember where you parked!
Seems like common sense right? Well you may think you remembered until you’ve spent endless hours in the park, with tired and cranky kids. Pro tip? Take a picture! At the end of every parking aisle are numbers, just snap a picture on your phone just in case!
Pack plenty of snacks
Okay, again it seems like a given but even I forget this. And the snacks at the parks add up! Not only do you need plenty of snacks to get through the day, but to help bribe the kids before a meltdown happens.
In fact, you should make sure your bag is well packed with all and any essentials. I’ll get into those later.
Take advantage of Baby Care Centers
Every park at Disney has at least one baby care center. There, you can take a much needed break from the heat while taking care of the little ones. There are breastfeeding rooms with comfy chairs and rockers, changing tables, and even bottle warmers and microwaves for milk or to warm up food. These centers are also equipped with diapers, wipes, creams, and baby food for purchase in case you forget or run out – or simply don’t want to carry these with you.
Did I mention these are air conditioned? Yeah, take advantage!
Bottle warmer, hot water dispenser for formula and microwave available at the Baby Center in Hollywood Studios Strollers are a necessity, not an option
Whether you bring your own or rent a stroller, you need one. Personally, I like to have my own stroller but that’s all up to you. If you bring your own you can tie a ribbon or hang a stroller sign. Make your own, or check out these options on Etsy
If you do choose to rent at Disney, just know they are not the most comfortable for sitting in. They are hard and plastic, and don’t recline! Just something to keep in mind
Bring a baby carrier if visiting with an infant!
While you should bring a stroller, a baby carrier is super helpful when going on rides with babies! If you didn’t know – YES there are baby friendly rides. Having your littlest ones in a carrier helps with maneuvering in lines and sitting on rides. Stroller parking for rides are often a short walk from the entrance to the ride itself. Unless you want to be carrying your baby in your arms, a carrier is a lifesaver for your arms and back!
Play Zone at Epcot Take advantage of hidden playgrounds
Did you know Disney parks have playgrounds? Yeah It’s not something I knew right away either! This is a great option for kids to get their energy out, especially if you have to wait for other members of your party on a ride. Each park has at least one playground where kids can stretch and run around.
Pack PJs
This is something I learned the hard way. As a local Disney mom, we have about a 30-40 minute drive back home, which sometimes turns into an hour. Whether you’re local or staying at the resorts, changing little ones into pjs before leaving the park means a smoother transition to bedtime. Nine times out of ten they’ll fall asleep in the car before you make it back.
Do’s and Don’ts at Disney
There are some things you want to keep in mind when at the parks with kids:
DO: Have some sort of identifier on your kids. Your name and number in their pocket is a great idea.
DO: Take a picture of them and their outfit for the day, you never knowDON’T: Have clothing or bags with their name written on it. If a stranger can call their name that’s a no!
DO: Make sure your bag and stroller are adequately packed! Some bag staples should include:
- Sunscreen
- A stroller fan
- A change of clothes (accidents happen, so do sprinklers)
- A wet bag or reusable stasher bag (for holding the accidents or wet clothes)
- Snacks
- Frida Baby Cooling Gel Pads – not just for fevers, these work GREAT at keeping little ones cool on a hot park day!
- Portable charger or power bank
- Hand sanitizer
Now that you know what to do – are you ready to go!? Disney is waiting for you to come visit! Want to see more Disney tips and real time park events? Remember to follow along on Instagram for more!

Orlando with Toddlers
Orlando is the perfect city for kids! There are endless activities from parks, to museums, and much, much more. Let’s check out some of the most popular things to do in Orlando with toddlers!
1. Orlando Science Center
OSC is the perfect way to pass the time with toddlers. It’s a great way to cool off in the ac during the hot summer months, and hide from the rain during the storms. You can’t go wrong! There’s Toddler Town for little ones 0-2, and Kids Town for kids up to 7 years old! There’s so much learning through interactive play, even the grown ups will have fun! Check out what else there is to do at OSC here.
2. Legoland
While not exactly in Orlando, it is a quick 1 hour drive away. Legoland has to be the perfect park for toddlers ever! There is an entire side of the park dedicated to toddler rides and it’s a quite sizable area. That being said if you decide to venture to other areas of the park the rides for toddlers are basically nonexistent.
3. Central Florida Zoo
Located north of Orlando in Sanford lies one of the best zoos I have ever been to, the Central Florida Zoo. They are a nonprofit zoo, which means your ticket sales go directly to the upkeep of the animals and conservation efforts. You’ll do a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes. And don’t worry, the zoo is stroller friendly!
4. Icon Park
Icon Park is a great spot for locals and tourists alike because it’s great for ANY age, even toddlers! There’s many great attractions like The Wheel, Museum of Illusion, and Sea Life Orlando. Sea Life has been one of our favorites, and we’ve gone multiple times. It’s a good rainy day activity and the 360 degree tank is worth the visit! Want to know all you can do at Icon Park? Click here!
5. Animal Kingdom
Notice how I could have just said Disney, but no. While each park has its pros and cons for bringing toddlers or babies, Animal Kingdom is our top pick for going with kids. We go with our toddler and infant and it’s by far our favorite park. I think we can ride Kilimanjaro Safaris everyday and not get tired of it. Not to mention the animal habitats spread all around the park, and who doesn’t like to see Sea Otters? Dinoland is also a great area to hang with the whole family and grab a bite at Restaurantosaurus.
6. The Crayola Experience
The Crapola Experience, located right next to the Florida Mall, is a great option to spend the day with kids! They now have Toddler Tuesdays from 10 am – 1 pm where toddlers can enjoy special crafts and activities! These include trying out toddler geared products, a character meet and greet, play time at Toddler Town or Stomp and Play, as well as a specialty snack pack!
7. Anywhere, Really!
Okay I know how it sounds, but Orlando really is a great place to be with the whole family. You can find awesome playgrounds and parks like near Lake Eola or Ivanhoe Village. Head over to The Crayon Experience for a colorful time. Or walk around Disney Springs or City Walk for food and fun!
There are restaurants, activities, and events always happening in Orlando – you don’t even need to look very hard. Make sure you bookmark this post and check back in, or head over to instagram as we explore family fun in Orlando and the world around us!

Toddler Time at the Orlando Science Center
There is no shortage of kids activities and events here in Orlando. One of my favorite ways to get out of the house with my toddler is at the Orlando Science Center! Not only is there so much to do, but it is the perfect activity despite the rain and heat we get here in Orlando.
The science center is great for all ages, but especially so for toddlers which is a huge plus. With one entire wing of the museum dedicated to interactive, learning based play, called Kids Town. Let’s get into all OSC has to offer!
Orange Town
Right when you walk in you’ll find Orange Grove, a true Florida experience! Kids will learn to move oranges throughout the space with interactive gears, buttons, and levers. There is an area for even the smallest learners to put the oranges on the tree. We even have a little market with large fruit, a register, and English and Spanish names for the fruit! This area is great for under one up to kids 5-6 years old that will still enjoy the fun.
Climb Time
As you make your way through a tri-color shadow light display you’ll find climb time! Best for bigger kids 4-7 years old, this is where kids can run, jump, and well, climb! They’ll learn to use their hand eye coordination, develop motor skills, and overcome fears.
Toddler Town
Making your way even further you’ll find toddler town for 0-2 year olds! Take your shoes off and let the little ones crawl, climb, and jump on the foam structures. Our littlest ones will learn to navigate with confidence while us parents can step back and watch with a careful eye. There are even some interactive elements to excite babies and toddlers alike!
Water Tables
If you have a foldable poncho for your kids this is the place to use it. With multiple water tables containing fountains, boats, pipes, and even water falling from an overhead sprinkler, this is a lot of fun for the kids and a lot of anxious parents. Don’t worry, there are waterproof smocks available to try and minimize the wet clothes!
Explore It
Build and tinker in this awesome interactive space. Great for 2 years and up, there are large blocks to build, things to climb, and more!
Just to the left of explore it are more interactive experiences in Kids Town. My toddler absolutely loves to build his track with loops and hills to roll balls down and see how fast they go! There’s a cool mosaic area where your kids creations are projected on a big screen on the wall. Kids can even interact with air, watching balls seem to float and colorful scarves fly through some intricate pipes and shoot around the room!
While the Orlando Science Center is good for ALL ages, the toddler friendly atmosphere makes it a must do for our youngest explorers. Kids are encouraged to touch and interact with all the activities in Kids Town. There is so much more offered in the museum as well! Check out the first floor for some animals that make Florida home, or head upstairs to learn about the atmosphere, this earth, and all things science! There’s even an earthquake and hurricane simulator you have to try!
If you’re visiting Orlando, this is a great stop to escape the heat or rain that so often hits here. If you’re an Orlando local I really recommend getting the OSC yearly membership! It’s affordable for a family of four, and I promise you’ll be taking advantage to get out of the house. The Orlando Science Center is a win-win for everyone!
To check out more about the awesome family activities Orlando has to offer, make sure you’re following along on Instagram as we explore our local world!

5 Eco Friendly Baby and Kids Mattresses
Rumor has it we spend a third of our life in bed. Unless your my toddler then he spends more time in mom and dad’s bed! When you spend so much time in one place, have you ever stopped to think our mattresses might actually be toxic? You might never guess you needed an eco friendly option to protect us when we’re sleeping. Most mattresses on the market are filled with chemicals, flame retardants, formaldehyde, and VOCs we are breathing in overnight
Luckily, there are sustainable solutions to our nightmares. Here are the top eco-friendly and non-toxic mattresses on the market for your clean and green household.
1. Avocado
You may have seen Avocado mattresses all over social media. What you may not have known is they have an infant and toddler line as well. With organic crib mattresses, pillows, and sheets you can’t go wrong with Avocado. Their products are formaldehyde free, Climate Neutral, GreenGuard Gold, OEKO-TEX and GOTS certified as well.
2. Naturepedic
The Naturepedic crib mattress is made with organic cotton and a non-GMO sugar cane derived polyethylene waterproof cover. This mattress is made without harmful chemicals, and contains no latex, soy, GMOs, vinyl/PVC, phthalates, formaldehyde, flame retardants, polyurethane foam, or PFCs.
3. OMI
The OMI organic crib mattresses offer multiple sizes such as your standard or oval crib, as well as offer 100% organic latex or innerspring. What sets OMI aside is not only are their mattresses organic (GOTS, GOLS and GreenGuard Gold certified) and made with non-toxic ingredients, but their manufacturing process is highly regulated. Workers can’t wear perfumes or fabric softeners to avoid contamination with the mattresses. The downside, you’re definitely paying the price for this top of the line quality and care. But can you put a price on safety and sleep security?
4. Allswell
The Allswell Natural crib mattress is an affordable, natural, 100% organic option that will take you well into the toddler years. With a reversible water-resistant coconut fiber infant side and a plush natural latex toddler side, you will definitely get your money’s worth. The mattress cover is Organic, GOTS and OEKO-TEX Certified, and Waterproof.
5. My Green Mattress
The Emily organic crib mattress from My Green Mattress is a top choice for clean sleep. Made free from toxic chemicals, the breathable pad is made with coconut fibers and organic latex. The GOLS certified organic coconut fiber and OEKO-TEX certified latex are sustainably sourced. This means not only healthy sleep for your baby, but a happier planet as well!
Healthy sleep should be a no brainer. Unfortunately, not all mattresses are made the same and we need to take care the materials we lay our heads on. Especially when it comes to our children, toxins are not welcome! Do your part for the safety of your kids and better materials from this earth. When shopping for your little one’s sleep, choose green, clean, and organic options for safe, sweet dreams.

Baby Wearing 101; Benefits and Carriers to Get You Started
Baby wearing has been done for centuries, across almost every culture around the world. There are many benefits to baby wearing for baby AND parent. When I first became a mom I’ll admit I was very intimidated to baby wear, but I soon realized it was the only way to get things done and keep baby close.
I want to start off that while I will be sharing resources regarding baby wearing from legitimate sources, I after all am a mother myself and what works for me may not work for you. Here’s a 101 on baby wearing, it’s benefits, and carriers to get you started!
Why should we wear our baby?
Baby wearing has many benefits! For our little ones, it helps regulate their system through the practice of skin to skin, helps them feel secure, usually reduces crying and enhances the connection between parent and baby.
There are other benefits for mom and dad too! For dad, baby wearing provided extra moments of bonding with baby. This isn’t to say that mom can’t bond by wearing – she can! However since dads sometimes have less chances of bonding (I.e. they can’t breastfeed), baby wearing helps strengthen that connection!
Especially in the early days, babies tend to crave that connection and end up needing more time in our arms and contact naps. By putting your baby in a carrier or wrap, you free yourself (and your arms) to do other things, like eat! It’s even shown that baby wearing promotes breastfeeding for longer!
If you have multiple kids, baby wearing is perfect for having to juggle more than one kid. It’s especially helpful if you have a super active toddler and newborn like I did!
Is baby wearing safe?
Yes! As long as it’s done correctly. You’ll want to make sure your baby is in the best position to avoid things like hip dysplasia. Babies under 6 months should always be facing you, never forward facing! Another thing to remember is TICKS:
- T: Tight. Baby should be upright and tight
- I: In view at all times
- C: Close enough to kiss
- K: Keep chin off chest
- S: Supported back
Which carrier is best?
Well, that depends on you! There are newborn carriers, wrap carriers, ring slings and more! Everyone has their preference, and that includes baby too! My first loved being in ring slings but never in wraps. My second is just happy being close and carried! Let’s break down some carriers, starting with my personal favorite!
1. Ergo Baby
My personal favorite carrier is my Ergo Baby 360. My son is VERY heavy, I’m talking about over 20 lbs at 5 months! So I needed a carrier that would not only support him, but my back too. My Ergo Baby as great support on my waist and the arm straps are padded and help distribute the weight.
Another reason why I picked this carrier is it can be used in multiple positions: inward facing, front facing, hip carry, and even on my back. It can support up to 45 lbs which means I can even throw my toddler on my back! I can also breastfeed in this carrier, which was a huge must!
This is considered a soft structured carrier. There is no metal in this carrier, which also means it’s approved for TSA. When we travel, I do not have to remove my baby to go through the metal detector!
2. Solly Baby Wrap
My Solly Baby wrap carrier is my absolute favorite for the newborn days and first months. I like that the Solly Baby is one long, continuous piece unlike the baby k’tan, which is two separate pieces of fabric.
I felt way more secure wrapping this around me and keeping my baby close. While it does take practice to tie it best, once you get the hang of it, you’ll realize the benefits of a wrap carrier.
Wrap carriers are best for newborns and can support 8 lbs to about 20-25 lbs. I will say, personally, once my baby was getting close to 20 lbs I did look for something more sturdy to carry him in.
3. Ring Sling
Ring slings are one big piece of fabric that is tied using two rings by your shoulder. This type of carrier if you’re the type of parent that wears their baby on their hip. It is recommended to use this with babies over 6 months old that can support themselves.
I found the ring sling the easiest to be able to put on myself when out with my little ones. Although instinctively, I still end up holding them with one hand in this type of carrier.
4. Hiking Carrier
While I haven’t personally used this type of carrier, a hiking backpack can help carry your baby or toddler in the outdoors. They usually provide way more support than your traditional everyday carrier. They also have features like a sunshade and storage to help when you’re out on longer trails. If you’re an active family I would look into a carrier like this for your back, or one where the baby is positioned on your shoulders as well!
Getting Started
Carriers are a great (and necessary) product to put on your baby registry! Some can be a little pricey, and especially as a first time parent you just won’t know what works for you until you try! Many libraries and local groups like La Leche League are great resources for baby wearing information and classes. There’s even a Sling Library which helps provide education, classes, and carriers to parents!
While the world of baby wearing can be intimidating, you have to start somewhere! There are many other great companies like Wild Bird (slings) and Baby Tula (soft structure carriers) with different varieties and prints too!
Baby wearing is a practice that dates back thousands of years, so why not start your journey today?

Repurposing Holiday Waste
If you’re anything like us, the kids always end up getting a ton of presents which means a ton of waste. No matter how much we ask for experiences not things, it never truly turns out that way. Luckily, there are ways to turn waste into purposeful objects and give them a second life!
1. Wrapping Paper
Wrapping paper is the gift that keeps on giving, literally! Wrapping paper can be saved and reused for future gifts whether it be for birthdays, anniversaries, or Christmas. Pro tip: save the brown paper that comes in packages to use as wrapping paper! Ribbons and bows should be reused as well!
2. Cardboard Boxes
This is by far the most fun, albeit the most work. But cardboard boxes make great playhouses! Not only are you repurposing boxes for fun which can last months – you can also repurpose wrapping paper to decorate and make them unique and festive! Check out this step by step guide on how to make the best cardboard box playhouses ever!
3. Christmas Trees
This one is a bit harder to use the whole tree, but there are things you can do to make sure you get the most out of a live tree! Pine needles can be used in a homemade holiday tea but only spruce and fir trees are edible. There are many benefits including it being full of antioxidants and stress relief.
Use branches and make upcycled ornaments for next year. The needles can also be made into a homemade paintbrush for little ones! If you’re really handy, check out this tutorial for making blocks out of Christmas tree trunks, or checkers out of the branches here. When done, find out where in your local city they recycle trees and turn them to compost. You can even trade in the tree for a fresh bag of compost to use in your garden!4. Holiday Cards
We love sending and receiving Christmas cards. But what other purpose do they have other than being displayed for the holidays? Well, you can cut them into cool designs and use as gift tags for next year! If you REALLY want to be crafty, cutting out each family’s pictures and using that as a super personal gift tag!
Of course, not everything can be reused. What’s important is being conscious and mindful of our impact on this world. If you can’t reuse – then recycle! Pay careful attention to your local recycling laws too! If you’re creative, anything can be repurposed! Well, almost anything!
Here’s to a safe, happy, and healthy holidays!

Raising Bilingual Kids
My husband and I had childhoods that were almost the exact opposite of each other. I was born abroad and raised in the US, while he was born in NY and raised in Colombia. Yet we had one big thing in common, we were both raised bilingual.
For him, a combination of movies and trips back to NY every summer kept both languages alive. While I was raised by my abuela and tía who didn’t speak English. And also I’m from Queens, NY where Spanglish reigns.
Patrick and I were always on the same page as far as raising our children to be bilingual. We started exposing Santi to language very early on. Now, at two years old he can count to 10 in Spanish and his ABC’s in English. He can tell you about his shoes and animals in both languages too!
Here’s some ways that we started dual language learning at home:
1. Books
Books are one of my favorite ways to learn a language! It’s screen free and a great bonding activity!
Cali’s Books
Call’s Books was created by a mom who wanted to teach her daughter her native language of French. What she created is a celebration of cultures from around the world.
These books also have sound, where you can sing along to your children Greek, Brazilian, Chinese and Spanish nursery rhymes.Lil Libros
Celebrating our heritage, Lil Libros books are completely bilingual. Not only are they written in both English and Spanish, but they celebrate aspects of our culture like El Chavo, La Llorona, Selena, and cities like Oaxaca, San Salvador, and San Juan! When they came out with the Bogotá and Havana books I was first in line to order, to celebrte where our families are from!
2. Shows
Let’s face it as much as we want to avoid screen time, there’s moments when we need it. Here are our top pics when we want to dance, sing, and learn together:
Canticos
Cánticos is one of our favorite bilingual shows to watch! With beloved songs and nursery rhymes sung in English, and then “otra vez!” en Español!
Pocoyo
Pocoyo – which literally translates to “little me” from Spanish is the most adorable show ever! Pocoyo along with his friends Eli and Pato are always off on an adventure. We watch in both English and Spanish, and this is one show Santi has loved since he was about 8 months old – and still does to this day!
Sesame Street
No matter what language you want your child learning, Sesame Street is a great language teacher! You get the foundations of whatever language you’re watching. I always recommend this for anyone looking to introduce a new language to your little one
La Granja de Zenon
La Granja de Zenon (Zenon’s Farm) Is full of songs that are sure to be on repeat. This is another top show in our house, with Spanish songs like “La Vaca Lola,” “La Gallina Turuleca,” and more. I recently found out there is an English version too, but it’s just not the same.
Language Learning at Home
There are a few ways that you can enforce multiple language learning at home.
If you have a two parent household (or grandparents in the home) mom can speak English and dad can speak Spanish, for example.
Another technique is half days of language learning. A good friend of mine was teaching her daughter three languages. She would do German in the morning, Polish in the afternoon, and English when dad got home at night.
We speak to Santi in Spanish, yet he always heard us speaking English. One set of grandparents also exclusively speak to him in English. Our pediatrician at the time mentioned that kids growing up in the US will learn English once in school and exposed to kids, so focusing on one language at home is fine and will strengthen their understanding in that language.
Being fluent in multiple languages will set your kids up for success in an increasingly globalized world. Michigan State University says “Between the ages of 0-3, the brains of young children are uniquely suited to learn a second language as the brain is in its most flexible stage. In fact, bilingually exposed infants excelled in detecting a switch in language as early as 6 months old.”
If one thing is for certain, it’s that kids are like sponges. Start early and reinforce language learning through music, shows, books, and the way you speak in front of your children matters!
Point is, there is no direct line to language learning other than consistency! Good luck on this journey, and join us as we continue to navigate language and cultural learning!
