Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest country for Americans to move to in 2026?
Mexico, Portugal, Panama and Costa Rica consistently rank as the easiest destinations for U.S. citizens. They all offer clear residency pathways, strong expat infrastructure, and accept income or pension documentation as the primary qualifier. Mexico’s residency income threshold rose in 2024, so Panama and Costa Rica now edge out on affordability, but Mexico still wins on border proximity.
Which country has the lowest income requirement for a retirement visa?
Panama and Costa Rica both require only $1,000/month in pension income — the lowest thresholds in the world. Ecuador follows at ~$1,410/month. The Philippines SRRV requires just $800/month pension (age 50+) plus a $10,000 deposit that remains yours.
Can I keep my U.S. remote job while living abroad on a digital nomad visa?
Yes — that’s exactly what these visas are designed for. Every digital nomad visa in this guide is built for remote workers employed by, or contracted with, non-local companies. You retain your U.S. employer and salary; you simply reside elsewhere. Tax residency rules vary by country and length of stay.
Do I still have to pay U.S. taxes if I live abroad?
Yes. The U.S. taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live. However, you can typically avoid double taxation using the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE, ~$126,500 in 2024) or the Foreign Tax Credit. You’ll still need to file annually, and FBAR/FATCA reporting applies for foreign accounts over thresholds. Consult a CPA who specializes in expat tax.
Do I lose my U.S. citizenship if I become a citizen of another country?
No, not automatically. The U.S. allows dual citizenship with most countries. You only lose U.S. citizenship if you formally renounce it. Some destination countries may require you to renounce when naturalizing — verify their rules before committing.
Can I claim Italian, Irish, Polish or German citizenship through my ancestor?
Many Americans qualify. Ireland allows claims through a grandparent (or great-grandparent if your parent registered). Italy’s jure sanguinis was significantly tightened in March 2025 — now limited to parent or grandparent. Germany expanded §116 restoration for descendants of those persecuted by the Nazi regime. Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Greece all have ancestry pathways. Eligibility requires documentary proof of lineage — start with your own and your parents’ birth/marriage records.
How long does the visa application process typically take?
It varies widely. Panama Pensionado: 4–6 months. Portugal D8: 3–6 months. Italy DNV: 1–3 months. Mexico Temporary Resident: 2–8 weeks at the consulate + completion in Mexico. Thailand DTV: 2–4 weeks. Add time for document apostilles (FBI background check, birth/marriage certificates) which alone can take 6–10 weeks. Start document preparation 4–6 months before your intended move.
What is an apostille and why do I need one?
An apostille is an internationally recognized form of document authentication under the Hague Convention. Most countries require key U.S. documents (FBI background check, birth certificate, marriage certificate, diplomas) to be apostilled before they’ll accept them. FBI background checks are apostilled by the U.S. Department of State; state-issued documents are apostilled by the Secretary of State of the issuing state.
Can I take my kids and enroll them in local schools?
Yes. Every family-eligible visa includes dependents, and most destinations offer free or low-cost public education to legal residents. Research the language of instruction — Portugal, Spain, Italy and France teach in their native language; Philippines, Belize and Malta teach in English. International schools (IB, American, British curriculum) exist in every major expat hub, typically $5,000–$30,000/year.
What is the Portugal Golden Visa situation in 2026?
Portugal eliminated the real estate investment route in October 2023. The Golden Visa is still open — but now requires a €500K investment in qualifying venture capital or private equity funds, or a €500K contribution to scientific research. The minimum stay requirement (7 days/year) and path to citizenship after 5 years remain intact.
Is Spain’s Golden Visa still available?
No — Spain closed its Golden Visa to new applicants on April 3, 2025. Existing holders retain their status. If you want Spanish residency, the Digital Nomad Visa, Non-Lucrative Visa, or Entrepreneur Visa are the remaining pathways.
Which country is best for families with kids?
If schools are your priority, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Costa Rica and Mexico all offer exceptional family infrastructure. Germany and Netherlands provide free education through university. Portugal and Spain offer strong bilingual public schools. Belize and Philippines have English-medium schools that ease the transition. For safety + warm weather + strong schools, Costa Rica and Portugal tie for the top.
